How to Measure a Room for Interior Design: A Simple Guide
Don’t have a floor plan from your landlord? A simple sketch with measurements is enough to start your online interior design project.
You’ll need a measuring tape, paper, a pencil and your phone.
Write all measurements in centimetres.
1. Draw a simple room sketch
Draw your room as if you were looking at it from above. Mark the doors, windows and any built-in cupboards or unusual corners.
It doesn’t need to look professional. Just leave enough space to write your measurements.

2. Measure every wall
Measure each wall from corner to corner. Keep the tape straight and write each measurement on your sketch.
Measure all walls, even if they look the same length. Include any alcoves or recesses.

3. Add doors and windows
For each door, note its width, including the frame, and its distance from the nearest corner. Draw an arrow showing which way it opens.
For each window, record:
-
Width and height, including the frame.
-
Distance from the nearest corner.
-
Height from the floor to the top of the windowsill.
Mark balcony doors too, and note whether windows open into the room.

4. Add ceiling height and fixed features
Measure from the floor to the ceiling.
Mark radiators, sockets, light switches and built-in storage on your sketch. Add the size and position of radiators and built-in furniture.
If the ceiling slopes, mark where the slope starts and record its lowest and highest heights.
5. Measure furniture you want to keep
For each piece, write down its width, depth and height, and take a photo.
Measure the widest points, including sofa arms or handles. For a sofa bed or extending table, include its size when open too.

6. Take photos and check your sketch
Take photos from different corners in daylight. Include close-ups of any unusual features.
Before sending, check that your sketch includes:
-
All wall measurements.
-
Doors, windows and their positions.
-
Ceiling height.
-
Fixed features.
-
Measurements of furniture you’re keeping.
If a measurement is approximate, label it clearly. Photograph your sketch so all the numbers are easy to read.
